Do solar panels really work at the cold weather? The solar energy tips experts have all been telling us that solar energy does work during the cold weather months – or at least works very well if you do it right. Solar panels perform very well during the winter at a given grid near you. Low temperatures do not stop solar panels from converting free solar energy into electrical power.
The short answer, yes they do, during low temperature days, solar panels do their work very well. For this reason, many utility companies are starting to add solar energy generation to their electricity bills. Just make sure you get a unit that matches the amount of sunlight your yard receives throughout the day. If you have a large amount of sunlight, for example, then a mega-solar system may be necessary.
Another thing to consider is that although solar panels do work during the cold air months, they do not do as good or as well in the warm air seasons. This is because the sun’s rays cannot travel through many layers of cloud before being absorbed by the earth’s atmosphere. So although your solar panels are receiving the sun’s rays during the daytime, many of them will not receive the intense rays needed to produce high voltage.
How about during the snow? Well the solar panels do not work as well. Usually you will need to mount them higher on the roof for this application. But even in relatively good snow conditions, the energy produced does not compare to other forms of renewable energy. In fact, in some cases it may actually make your electric bill go up.
Solar panels can still be used in this environment but one of the most important energy saving tips is reducing the amount of electricity used when heating your home. For this you will want to look at insulating your windows and doors. You can do this by either using foam insulation or adding double panes of glass to your windows. In addition, double panes of glass will increase the amount of light that can pass through the window thus reducing the amount of heat that escapes into your home. Insulation is very important because it reduces the amount of heat that escapes into your home.
How about during the fall and the winter months? Unfortunately, solar energy production in these colder months is quite limited. If you live in a region where snow is common this can limit your solar energy production significantly. One way to overcome this problem is to insulate your swimming pool and use the sun to heat the water. As the temperature drops into the 20’s during the fall and winter months your heating costs will go down as well. Again, the best way to do this is to insulate your swimming pool and use solar energy as needed.
Does solar panels work in the summer? The answer is yes and no. It depends on the type of solar energy you are using. Photovoltaic energy is great for producing electricity in the summer because it is most efficient at temperatures that are around ninety degrees Fahrenheit. However, if the solar energy you are using is not capable of producing electricity at these low temperatures then your solar energy will not work at all.
How about in the long term? This is a trickier question to answer since the answer will vary depending on your lifestyle and current energy costs. Obviously you will save money on your heating and cooling costs over time since you will not have to pay these high energy costs. However, there are other factors to consider. If you live in a location that has a peak energy demand during the summer months and a relatively flat energy demand during the winter then you may find that solar energy is not a good idea during the colder months. For example, if you live in a hot, dry desert then you may be better off with a water heater instead of a solar panel system.
